How Hearst is modernizing newsroom and revenue operations
In a sponsored Q&A for Editor & Publisher, Hearst Newspapers SVP of Technology Mike Fogel talks through standardizing technology across Hearst's properties, where the advertising revenue cycle goes next, and the part Indigo Trigger plays in order and billing system work.

Editor & Publisher spoke with Mike Fogel, SVP of Technology at Hearst Newspapers, for a sponsored Q&A on running technology across one of the industry's largest newspaper groups.
Fogel describes two standing pressures. The first is deciding which requests get resources, which Hearst handles by asking business owners to make the case for a project before it is staffed. The second is standardization: production, news layout, consumer revenue, and digital are largely on shared standards, and the advertising side is still on that journey.
On the advertising revenue cycle, Hearst started with the insertion order system, standardizing ad sizes and products where it could. Lead-to-close software and AI-assisted lead generation are the next area of focus.
The conversation also covers specialized partners. Fogel describes Indigo Trigger as supplementing his team, at times leading parts of order and billing system implementations, and finding workflow and process efficiencies along the way.
The piece closes on Indigo Trigger's Lead to Cash Bash, the revenue operations event where Fogel and his team received the 2025 Basher of the Year award.
